They are both right. Project Management is NOT, at it’s core, about the creation of Gantt charts and reports. It is about removing obstacles for resources so that they can get their work done.
An important point here though is that sometimes in order to do an effective job of removing those roadblocks the PM must create Gantt charts and reports. The PM must compel resources to spend time filling in timesheets (or some other status report). The PM must do some things that SEEM not to add any value in order to make sure that others can add their best value.
A lot gets said about the role of the PM and the value they add (or subtract depending on who you talk to) and I think that sometimes it gets lost that the value they add might not seem like value to everyone. :-)
