PM - Getting Things Done...but...

Frank Patrick talks here about Jack Vinson’s post called Why Do Project Management.

They are both right. Project Management is NOT, at it’s core, about the creation of Gantt charts and reports. It is about removing obstacles for resources so that they can get their work done.

An important point here though is that sometimes in order to do an effective job of removing those roadblocks the PM must create Gantt charts and reports. The PM must compel resources to spend time filling in timesheets (or some other status report). The PM must do some things that SEEM not to add any value in order to make sure that others can add their best value.

A lot gets said about the role of the PM and the value they add (or subtract depending on who you talk to) and I think that sometimes it gets lost that the value they add might not seem like value to everyone. :-)

Great Blog. I will be watching this one.

And you are right. People do not see the value add in a Project Manager (on a dya to day basis)in our organisation - but funny enough, the only Projects that are successful have a qualified and professional Project Manager with a Business (not technical) focus at the helm.
